Behind the Scenes

February 4, 2010

Hi Melinda,

So last night I shot on a rooftop in the Filmore with Dylan and Raul. Britt helped me with lighting and Bobby, who is in your Intro class, boomed for the first time! We didn't get all of the shots I wanted cause the Frezzi batt died on us but Bobby said we could film again next Wed.

As we were waiting for the bus back, two thugs tried to rob us! Dylan, Raul, and I ran like hell and took a taxi home. Scariest event I've ever had in SF. They didn't have any weapons and Raul had a giant staff/stick but I'm really happy the situation didn't get too sticky. The thugs had the worst robbery line ever though, "Do you know where you are? Take it off town!"

Definitely calling taxi both there and back next week. I'm filming tonight in the alley way by the church. Reshooting part of the scene shot last semester with Dylan and Raul.

I'm hoping on Sunday to have a small rehearsal at Pedro Arrupe with Maria, Zac, and Dylan. Hope all is well and you have a wonderful weekend!

Thanks for all your help,

Kevin

Feature Film Directing – Direct Study Proposal

1. The main goal of the direct study is to finish principal photography with the main cast of the feature film I started last semester. I did not shoot as many scenes as I’d have liked to last semester because of the delayed shooting schedule and difficulty to obtain locations. This semester I plan to shoot twice as much footage than before or over 300 GBs (around 60 hours). This past semester I shot 130 GBs or 26 hours worth of footage. However, if I plan to complete the film by the summer I need to keep a tight shooting schedule and pick up a scene or shot every couple of days.

I plan to accomplish this ratio by scheduling more effectively with cast and crew. Over the winter break, I also wrote a few more pages and scenes to make up for some that I’ve decided to drop due to the extremely difficulty of finding good locations. Since the script is longer I’ll end up shooting

more footage, which will give me greater freedom and fluidity in the editing room.

2. The secondary goal of the direct study is to have an 80-minute rough-cut edit of the film with partial musical accompaniments. Once I have this cut together I plan to show a select group of friends and cast/crew to provide insight into what could be better or more fluid.

With the assistance from my musical friends and brother I will attempt to create an atmosphere for the film. Over the winter break, I worked on some of the score with my brother but think I’ll need help from all of my musician friends if I am going to be make it work properly. I plan to burn a few DVDs of my sequences to give to musicians and film friends so they can provide feedback throughout the editing process.

Since the semester hasn’t started yet and my work/class schedule hasn’t been 100% confirmed as well as the cast’s schedule, I have not provided a break down for filming. However, I plan to film the following scenes and locations first:

• Everything that takes place in the bed rooms between Curtis, Maya, and Adam.
• All of the bathroom scenes in one day since I don’t want to inconvenience my friend is loaning the location.
• All of Chronos’ scenes since I’ve had Raul sporting a beard for almost ½ a year!
• Blueprint of bunker/Opening animation sequence (not in the previous draft of Id)
• Maya’s flashback to her c-section since I have the location confirmed finally
• Curtis’ flashback and the continuation of Adam’s flashback
• Adam’s escape from the bunker and search for Lilith on the mainland
• Adam using the sailboat and Chronos in a canoe
• B-roll of the bunker and any additional shots

I've started to audition kittens for the film. My friend's cat just had a liter of kittens so I decided to film them to see which one had the best on screen personality. Which do you think we should cast?
